AGRICOLA FALSET-MARSA is the result of the merging of the cooperatives of Falset and Marsa, which at the time helped to reinforce and to culminate the project of improving our company, both at the level of production and elaboration.
It is situated in the district of Priorat, a region that owes its international fame to the grapes it cultivates and to the wines it elaborates. The wine making here is traditional. The Carthusian monks having introduced new methods of making wine in the 12th century, these methods today one still respected. Over eighty years of production and constant innovation has allowed us to offer a consistently high level of quality in our products. We are a competitive unique enterprise.
The cellar, in the modernist style, is of great architectural interest, (declared an Historic Monument). The work of the architect Cesar Martinell, a disciple of Gaudi, it is inspired by medieval forms, as you can see in the tracery over the arch of the main door and the two castellated towers.
The vineyards are grown by the winegrower partners who daily contribute with their wide experience and thorough knowledge of the last winemaking research to the achievement of top quality grapes.
GRENACHE and CARIGNAN grapes, native varietals of the area are blended with the best foreign grape varieties such as SYRAH, CABERNET SAUVIGNON, TEMPRANILLO and MERLOT in order to produce superior and more complex wines. The harvesting is supervised through exhaustive controls of each parcel. Parcels are frequently checked during the growth and maturity period, which allows us to find the best destiny of every grape in the verification process.
The microclimate is Mediterranean influenced and is characterized by a great temperature contrast between day and night, with very hot summers and cold winters. This fact together with different soil types: slate, sand, clay and limestone, and the relief of the land (flat and terraces) influence greatly the grape features.
As a result we achieve a high aromatic richness and a good acidity which together with a correct phonetic maturity allow us to elaborate rich colored and structured wines; these have a long maturing process in the bottle.
We have reinforced verification machinery in an important manner: grape reception, cool and heat fermentation controls, self-emptying vats, oak barrel selection from the best coopers, temperature control of the barrel room and the bottle room… The application of this technology means the achievement of best grapes quality respecting their native features which gives us the final product.
Since the cellar foundation (1919) we preserve the formula to elaborate an aperitif wine (vermouth) aged into centenarian oak barrels. Also we have available our traditional fortified dessert wines (sweet liqueur wines) elaborated with ancestral native techniques and our old and dry wine (ranci) produced outdoors at the cellar’s terrace and aged through a nearly centenary “solera”.
