
TERRA ALTA- Designation of Origin
The D.O. Terra Alta was established in 1972 with 47 registered cellars from 12municipalities in Catalonia. Terra Alta is a sparsely populated inland “comarca” (county) in Catalonia, Spain. Its capital is Gandesa.
Varieties covered by this designation:
White varieties: garnacha blanca, macabeu, parellada
Red varieties: garnacha negre, samsó (cariñena), garnacha peluda, syrah.
Geographical Situation
Small hills and Ebre river depression form spectacular countryside in this Catalan meridional county. The vineyards grow in the plane areas of the county and in the dry valleys. The vineyards are planted in the natural terraces, quite permeable that allow a good drainage.
Climate and Soil
Climate is Mediterranean with strong continental influence, rains are scarce and sun is rather strong. Average yearly temperature: 14,6 ºCelsius
